It’s official – white is now the UK’s favourite new car colour.
White was the most popular colour for new cars registered in the UK in 2014 for the second year running, according to figures just released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Almost a quarter of new cars registered in 2014 were white – the highest proportion since records began and up from less than 1% a decade ago.
So why is this happening? Some say it’s the minimalist “Apple effect” which causes owners to match their cars with gadgets.
Whatever, it’s only a few years since white cars sat unwanted and unloved on dealers’ forecourts. Now all that has changed – of the 2,476,435 new cars registered in 2014, 22.2% were white.
Go back to 2005 and less than 1% of the UK’s new car buyers chose white.

- Others – 6%
