Ford Mustang celebrates 55th birthday

The Ford Mustang is 55 years old – and the iconic muscle car has plenty to celebrate.

Ford claims the Mustang is the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the fourth straight year on the strength of 113,066 cars sold in 2018.

And also in 2018, Ford celebrated the production of its 10 millionth Mustang at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

Officially available in Europe since 2015, Mustang sales of 2,300 in the region are up more than 27% so far in 2019.

In Dunton, Essex, 66 enthusiasts brought their Mustangs along and joined four brand new models and classics from Ford’s own heritage collection. A selection then parked up to reveal a “55” formation from the air.

“We broke the mould when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets.

“Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”
