Audi’s high-speed driverless stunt

Audi RS7 laps Germany’s Hockenheim circuit in just over two minutes – with no-one behind the wheel.

The RS7 Piloted Driving Concept used only computers and sensors to guide it as it took on the high-speed challenge which was a curtain-raiser to the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) finale.

Up until now, driverless demonstrations have involved cars driving at low speeds. The RS7 concept car was driven autonomously to its physical limits with centimetre precision at speeds around as fast as a professional racing driver.

There were no other cars on the track at the time and it showed just how far self-driving cars have come in the last few years.

“The top performance by the Audi RS 7 today substantiates the skills of our development team with regard to piloted driving at Audi,” said Audi’s Prof Dr Ulrich Hackenberg.
