Worrying misconceptions revealed in Bank Holiday weekend survey
As millions take to the roads for the traditional August holiday getaway, a survey carried out by What Car? has revealed that drivers know shockingly little about what they are and aren’t allowed to do.
For instance, more than two fifths of motorists (41%) believe they would not be prosecuted if they were caught texting behind the wheel.
Almost seven out of 10 (69%) are unaware that towing a caravan or trailer without the correct additional B+E entitlement on their licence would land them with a motoring conviction.
Meanwhile, half did not realise that eating or drinking at the wheel can also lead to a legal penalty if the driver is deemed not to be in full control of their vehicle.
Almost as many (46%) said they would drive barefoot, despite the risk of it leading to an offence, while one motorist polled believed they could get away with running at least one red light before being prosecuted.
What Car? advises holidaymakers going slightly farther afield to make sure they are fully aware of the law abroad. For example, in France it is compulsory to carry a breathalyser in the car, along with a number of other items, including a hi-vis vest and warning triangle.
