Toyota’s FCV on track for 2015

Mass production hydrogen fuel cell cars move a step closer.

We’re on the verge of the next big thing in motoring. Toyota says it’s on track to
bring its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered car (FCV or FCEV) to market in 2015.

Building on the success it’s achieved with hybrid technology, Toyota believes it’s
close to creating the ultimate eco-car.

“Back in 2010, we promised our first fuel cell car for 2015 and we are fully on
track to honour our commitment,” said Toyota Motor Europe’s Karl Schlicht.

He added: “Fuel cell is a technology that can secure our concept of personal
mobility. That’s because fuel cells combine the strengths of EVs (electric
vehicles) and hybrids, with those of conventional cars.”

FCV are the ultimate in green cars because they have zero emissions – they only
emit water vapour – and they are capable of much higher ranges than EVs.

The model with which Toyota will pioneer its new technology is the FCV saloon
concept which promises a range of 500 miles on a single tank of fuel, 0-60mph in 10 seconds and refuelling will only take three minutes.

Honda, who already produce the Clarity in the States, and Hyundai also have FCV launches in the pipeline for 2015.
