100mpg London taxi trial

State-of-the-art cab hits the capital’s roads – far cleaner and more efficient than its current equivalent.

The new Metrocab is driven by two electric motors and a 1.0-litre petrol engine, coupled with a generator – or the ‘Range Extender’ – which is used to recharge the battery or provide power directly to the electric motors.

Charging is also available via any mains electric outlet providing even lower fuel consumption, and it has a combined range of nearly 350 miles.

The world’s first ‘Range Extender’ taxi, it is more than three times more fuel efficient than a comparable current London cab.

Zero-emissions in electric mode and regenerative braking all ensure a low fuel consumption through the course of the working day.

New Metrocab

Even when the petrol motor is used, the new Metrocab emits just 50g/km CO2 – 75% less CO2 than today’s equivalent taxis.

In theory, 98mpg is possible, which is more than three times more frugal than a comparable current London taxi.

With a design that pays hompage to London’s iconic black taxi, the new Metrocab is able to offer six passenger seats (plus optional seventh passenger seat in the front), full disabled accessibility, panoramic roof for views of the city and increased luggage space.

Developed by Frazer-Nash Research Ltd and Ecotive Ltd over the last 10 years, a small fleet of the new taxis are now operating, in association with ComCab, on a trial basis in London.
