South Korean giant is first manufacturer to roll out hydrogen-fuelled cars in UK.
The future is here as Hyundai delivers six ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles to UK customers.
With no harmful tailpipe emissions, the ix35 Fuel Cell can travel up to 350 miles before refuelling, which is a process similar to refuelling a petrol or diesel vehicle.
The news comes just days after Business Minister Matthew Hancock announced £11 million of UK government and industry funding to support hydrogen transport.
The aim of the investment is to create a nationwide hydrogen refuelling station network, boosting consumer confidence and increasing uptake of fuel cell vehicles.
Among the first to operate the pioneering ‘clean technology’ cars are organisations including Air Products, ITM Power, Johnson Matthey and Transport for London.
“Making the first UK customer deliveries of hydrogen-powered cars is a huge landmark for the industry,” said Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK.
“Hyundai is the first company in the world to start series-production of a fuel cell vehicle and is committed to rolling-out this technology in line with government plans to grow the refuelling infrastructure.”
Private motorists in the UK can order ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles now by contacting Hyundai UK directly with the first deliveries expected in 2015.
The first public hydrogen refuelling station was opened in Swindon in 2011. The new government investment will fund up to 15 new refuelling stations by the end of 2015.
