An historic 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Berlinetta bought by Mussolini for his lover Claretta Petacci has sold at a Paris action for £1.4m.
The Alfa Romeo took centre stage at RM Auctions’ Paris Sale on February 4.
It’s believed to be the very car that Petacci and other members of her family drove in convoy from Milan in a bid to find refuge across the Italian border in 1945, only to be stopped by partisans close to Lake Como.
Her fate after capture, along with that of Mussolini, is well known, and it is remarkable to think that her last journey was in this beautiful car.
The car experienced a chequered history after Petacci’s capture. It was found by a US Army officer after the war and shipped to the States where it was lost for many years.
Rediscovered in 1970 on a farm in New York, the Alfa was restored and has since won various awards around the world including “Best of Show” at the 2011 Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance.
