A Designer’s Manifesto: Zihang Zheng and the Art of Forged Magnesium

In high-performance automotive design, genuine innovation is a rare commodity. It’s a field where minor updates often disguise themselves as breakthroughs. However, on August 16th, at the renowned Exotics on Broadway event in Monterey, industrial designer Zihang Zheng and his co-founded brand, MADE_LIGHT, revealed a project that marked a true shift, with 40,000 spectators present. The launch of the Bespoke Forged Magnesium Wheels was more than just a product unveiling; it was a statement of a design philosophy centered on sophistication, restraint, and a steadfast commitment to engineering excellence.

The MADE_LIGHT display was presented along with other exotic vehicle manufactures such as Koenigsegg, Pagani. And the event displayed vehicles ranging from numerous Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Mclaren supercars. This gives MADE_LIGHT a solid validation of their high-end luxury brand image.

Zheng and the team’s work stands in direct contrast to the prevailing trend of “maximalism” in the aftermarket wheel industry—designs that often seek to impress through complexity and visual noise. He believes that actual impact comes from subtlety and a deep understanding of form. This core ideology is rooted in the timeless principle, once articulated by Virgil Abloh, that even a 3% change can create something entirely new and compelling. For Zheng, this means he doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel—he needs to perfect it. By studying the most iconic wheel designs of past eras, the team learned to identify their essential, enduring qualities and then reimagine them with modern technology and a refined aesthetic. The result is a collection of wheels, including the Minimum Mass and Stable Compound series, that are instantly recognizable yet refreshingly distinct. This careful balance ensures that enthusiasts feel an immediate connection to the designs, while their nuanced details reward a closer look over time.

The usage of forged magnesium as the primary material for the bespoke wheels was a bold one. While its superior strength-to-weight ratio has long been recognized in the world of motorsports, its application in road-going vehicles remains a developing field. Zheng and the team saw this not as a limitation, but as an opportunity. Working with forged magnesium presents unique challenges; certain angles and surface treatments that are simple with traditional aluminum are difficult or impossible to achieve. However, magnesium’s lightness allows Zheng and his team to pursue designs that would be structurally inefficient or too heavy if produced in aluminum. This material choice is at the heart of the MADE_LIGHT brand, which is dedicated to creating the lightest, highest-performing wheels on the market.

Each design draft undergoes multiple rounds of review, involving the design team for visual approval, engineers for structural validation, and the manufacturing team for production optimization. This holistic approach ensures that every wheel is not only a work of art but a feat of engineering, meeting the highest standards of safety and performance.

Zheng and the team’s design process is a masterclass in blending creative exploration with analytical rigor. The initial stages involve rapid concept modeling and quick visualization     . This allows them      to quickly iterate ideas and see how they will look on different vehicles, helping to refine proportions and aesthetics in real time. Once a concept is solidified, the workflow transitions to advanced CAD platforms     . This seamless integration ensures that the initial creative spark is never lost in the translation to a manufacturable product.

However, the pursuit of beauty never compromises safety. Every MADE_LIGHT wheel is subjected to rigorous Finite Element Analysis (FEA) testing. This advanced computational method simulates how a wheel will perform under a wide range of forces, heat, and vibration. This allows Zheng to make subtle, data-driven adjustments that enhance structural integrity without sacrificing the design’s original intent. Furthermore, the brand’s material suppliers hold internationally recognized certifications like SAE, TÜV, JWL, and VIA, guaranteeing that every wheel meets or exceeds global safety standards.

The physical display at Exotics on Broadway was a pivotal moment for the brand. Attendees could feel the remarkable weight difference between aluminum and magnesium wheels, an experience that validated the brand’s core proposition and promised new design possibilities. As Zheng observed, this opens the door to creating visually substantial designs that maintain an exceptionally light balance that is unattainable with traditional materials.

The display was also presented at Design Invitational on Sept.28. It was hosted at ArtCenter College of Design, where Zheng graduated from. MADE_LIGHT was presented as an alumni project along with other notable projects such as the Ford Bronco, Acura NSX, Audi TT, Lucid Gravity, and even the Slate Truck! Zheng was honored to be able to share his project with other alumni and students.

The feedback from both events was overwhelmingly positive, with enthusiasts praising the designs for their refreshing simplicity. Interestingly, one of the most significant insights came from the strong interest in SUV applications. While MADE_LIGHT’s initial focus was on high-performance sports cars, the response from this segment has encouraged Zheng and the team to devote considerable resources to developing SUV-specific styles. This direction is auspicious, as magnesium’s ability to absorb impacts better than aluminum not only improves fuel efficiency and acceleration but also enhances ride comfort—a key selling point for luxury vehicles.

For Zihang Zheng, the Bespoke Forged Magnesium Wheels project is more than a product launch; it is a powerful demonstration of his design philosophy. He views the process not as creating something from nothing, but as transforming established ideas into something fresh and innovative. His work with MADE_LIGHT positions him at the forefront of a movement toward more creative and elegant automotive accessories. By proving that genuine innovation lies not in complexity but in elegant simplification, he is setting a new benchmark for the entire industry.
