A-list film celebrity, Tom Hanks was one of the first Hollywood celebs to champion green issues and the use of electric cars. He has now been driving his teal green Scion XB around the streets of L.A. for over four years and shows no signs of changing back to diesel vehicles.
Hanks’s hybrid Scion XB has been converted to run on electricity using the eBox system. The Scion does not come cheap, with conversion costs the bulky, box shaped car with its lithium batteries cost him around £34,000. Using its 825 pounds of batteries though, gives him an average of 140 – 180 miles between recharging, which takes between 3 to 5 hours to get the 355 volt battery system back to full strength.
Although a particularly unattractive looking vehicle the Scion XB is doing its bit for the environment and with a top speed of 95 mph it does prove that the electric car doesn’t necessarily need to travel at the pace of a milk float.
Space enthusiast Hanks, said that along with the three electric cars on the moon, there was another in his garage. He recently wrote on the New Yorker Magazine on the subject “My electric car recently crossed 50,000 miles on the odometer, with its original batteries and not a splash of gasoline.”
He claims to only use the car to drive around the Los Angeles streets, helping friends move, doing shopping and running errands, the only time he has to go to a petrol station is if he needs lottery tickets.
