Hi Tech Car Pooling

It seems that Daimler have seen the future of car pooling and come up with an interesting mix of technology and travel.  Car2gether is the offshoot of Daimle’s Car2go scheme where the need for car ownership is removed, well at least if you live in Austin, Texas or Ulm, Germany.

Car2go allows you to book a car for a journey, take that journey and provided you leave it within the coverage area of the scheme it will be collected, refuelled and cleaned by the company.  All of the cars are Smart Fourtwos further emphasising the green credentials of the enterprise.

Car2gether is a similar scheme to Car2Go, based on car-pooling, it is a web-based car sharing community who all offer each other and request lifts off each other.  The car’s used in the scheme (Smart Fourtwo’s) reduce the carbon impact further still. As with Car2go, taking advantage of Car2gether requires users to register their details with the company.  Users will then provide details of the trip they wish to take, and this is where the really hi tech bit comes in, using an application on their smart phone (this like the registration is free.)   The system will then match the desired journey with those journeys being undertaken already registered and will also match the driver with the passenger if possible. The ride offers and searches are all displayed in a similar way to tweets on twitter, ensuring a steady, up-to-date stream of information is displayed. The strength of the smart phone usage is more than just a gimmick as it will allow for spur of the moment journeys when the passenger has nothing more than their smart phone with them.

The passenger will pay 9.5 cents per minute for the journey to the driver to help cover costs.  The scheme is being piloted in Ulm, Germany and starts in October.
